Before applying any joint compound or hot much to the torn area(s) you need to remove any loose paper that is surrounding the edge of the tear, because if your try and apply mud to it while its loose, it will just bubble up.
A nice trick to get those torn edges smooth, is use mesh tape all around the perimeter of the area.
Next, apply hot mud or joint compound to the whole torn area of the sheetrock, covering the mesh tape just enough to wait for it to dry and then apply the second coat.
Once the second coat is applied, texture it matching the current wall. There are some textures that don't need sanding but if it does, most likely it will only be the edges that need a little bit and a soft sand on the rest.
